1980ల నుండి జియోగ్రాఫిక్ ఇన్ఫర్మేషన్ సిస్టమ్స్ (GIS) తో పనిచేసిన అనుభవంతో, 90వ దశకంలో కేవలం ఒక ఫిజికల్ AAA మ్యాప్ పట్టుకుని మెంఫిస్కు డ్రైవ్ చేసిన రోజులను.. నేటి జనరేషన్ వాడకంతో పోలుస్తూ మేము మాట్లాడుకున్నాము. కాలిఫోర్నియాలోనే పుట్టి పెరిగిన మా పిల్లలు—ఇంజనీర్లు అయి ఉండి కూడా—లోకల్ గా పికప్ చేసుకోవడానికి కూడా నావిగేషన్ సిస్టమ్ ఆన్ చేయడం గురించి మా సరదా అనుభవాలను ఇందులో పంచుకున్నాము.
హైదరాబాద్ లాంటి కన్ఫ్యూజింగ్ అడ్రస్ సిస్టమ్స్ ఉన్న ప్రదేశాల్లో ఈ టూల్స్ దేవుడిచ్చిన వరం లాంటివే అయినా, సొంతగా ఆలోచించే శక్తిని మొత్తాన్ని ఒక స్క్రీన్కు అప్పగించడంలో నిజమైన ప్రమాదం ఉందని మా చర్చలో అభిప్రాయపడ్డాము. ఒకవేళ GPS పనిచేయడం ఆగిపోతే, మనం ఎలా సర్వైవ్ అవుతాం అని ప్రశ్నించుకున్నాము.

I survived navigating America with a physical AAA map back in the 90s, but today, kids need a GPS just to drive down the street!
In this Short, we tackle a highly relatable generational debate: are we losing our natural spatial awareness to navigation apps? As someone who has worked with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) since the 1980s, I remember driving cross-country to Memphis using nothing but a paper map and my own processing skills. Fast forward to today, and my son—an engineer who grew up right there in California—turns on his navigation system just to come pick me up locally!
While these tools are a godsend in places with confusing addressing systems (like Hyderabad!), there is a real danger in completely outsourcing our critical thinking to a screen. If the GPS goes blank, how do we survive?
