In this video, I provide a detailed critique of modern journalism by examining two contrasting interviews recently broadcast on CNN and CBS. I challenge the "both-sidesism" prevalent in Dana Bash's questioning of Congressman Jamie Raskin, where the media attempts to shift responsibility for heated political rhetoric in a way I find highly unprofessional. I contrast this with Norah O’Donnell’s recent work on 60 Minutes, where she successfully extracted a revealing soundbite from Donald Trump by using direct, evidence-based questioning regarding statements made after the White House Correspondents' Dinner.
My analysis explores the background of these specific media moments and explains why the framing of an interview is just as important as the questions themselves. I argue that the tendency toward false equivalence is a dangerous path for the press, and I highlight the specific journalistic techniques that can still lead to impactful and honest reporting. This video is my own effort to dissect how the media handles high-stakes political discourse and where there is still room for professional accountability.
