Frisco, TX: Top 1% National Merit (Indian) Students Under Attack. నేషనల్ మెరిట్ వివాదం.. అసలు నిజం!

ఈ వీడియోలో, ప్రొఫెసర్ మురళి, నేను ఇటీవల నన్ను ఎంతగానో ఆలోచింపజేసిన ఒక ముఖ్యమైన అంశం గురించి చాలా క్యాజువల్‌గా, మనసువిప్పి మాట్లాడుకున్నాం.

టెక్సాస్‌లోని ఫ్రిస్కో హెరిటేజ్ హైస్కూల్ నుండి నేషనల్ మెరిట్ సెమీఫైనలిస్టుల జాబితాను చూసినప్పుడు ఇది మొదలైంది. అమెరికాలో 'నేషనల్ మెరిట్ స్కాలర్‌షిప్' సాధించడం ఎంత కష్టమో తెలిసిన వారికి అర్థమవుతుంది—ఇది రాష్ట్రంలోనే టాప్ 1% విద్యార్థులకు మాత్రమే దక్కుతుంది. కానీ మన భారతీయ సంతతి పిల్లలు ఏటా దీన్ని ఎంతో సునాయాసంగా సాధిస్తూ వస్తున్నారు.

ఇదేదో అనుకోకుండా జరిగిందో లేక సిస్టమ్‌లోని లొసుగుల వల్ల వచ్చిన ఫలితమో కాదు. తల్లిదండ్రులు తమ పిల్లల భవిష్యత్తు కోసం చేసే త్యాగాలు, సమయం కేటాయించడం, చదువుకు ఇచ్చే ప్రాధాన్యత, క్రమశిక్షణల వల్లే ఇది సాధ్యమవుతోంది. అయితే మన పిల్లల ప్రతిభను అభినందించాల్సింది పోయి, కొందరు అజ్ఞానం, అసూయతో దీన్ని ఒక వివాదంగా మారుస్తూ ఆన్‌లైన్‌లో తప్పుడు ప్రచారం చేస్తున్నారు.

ఈ నేపథ్యంలో మురళి, నేను కలిసి కూర్చుని ఆ సోషల్ మీడియా పోస్టులను చూస్తూ అసలు విషయాన్ని చర్చించాం. విద్యార్థుల కఠిన శ్రమ, తల్లిదండ్రుల నిబద్ధత, మరియు ఆన్‌లైన్‌లో అసూయతో చేసే వ్యాఖ్యలను మనం ఎందుకు పట్టించుకోకూడదో ఈ సంభాషణలో వివరించాం.

In this video, Prof. Murali and I caught up for a frank, unscripted chat about something that really got under my skin recently.

We were looking at the list of National Merit Semifinalists from Heritage High School in Frisco, Texas. If you know anything about the National Merit Scholarship, you know it is damn hard to get—we’re talking about the top 1% across the state. Yet, our Indian-American kids make it look so effortless year after year.

It’s not some accident or "systemic issue." It comes down to parents making the hard, intentional choices—sacrificing time, investing in education, and teaching kids the value of discipline and hard work. But instead of celebrating these students, some people online—driven by pure ignorance and jealousy—are turning it into a controversy and crying foul. Even worse, seeing subtle institutional nods to this kind of nonsense just pushed me to speak out.

Murali and I just sit down, pull up the posts, and talk through the whole situation: the effort behind real academic merit, the parenting culture that drives it, and why we shouldn't let bitter online commentary undermine what these kids have achieved.
