In this video, I have an in-depth chat with Kiran about the harsh financial realities facing professors and school teachers in the United States. Kiran points out that many highly qualified professors—including IIT graduates with 10 to 15 years of corporate C-level experience at companies like IBM—are paid what amounts to peanuts at universities. I completely agree with this assessment, noting that my own salary is public information and clearly reflects this low pay scale. We explore the serious risk of losing top talent to the private sector, drawing a parallel to how the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) recently lost scientists to private space enterprises. If university enrollments drop and budgets tighten, American colleges face the exact same threat of an academic brain drain.

Despite the low pay, I explain to Kiran that the academic freedom the teaching profession offers—the ability to speak one's mind and analyze politics without fear of retribution—is a privilege I cannot trade away. However, we both strongly acknowledge the severe financial plight of public school teachers. Addressing a viewer's comment, I emphasize that the "noble profession" label should never be used to justify terrible compensation. Kiran highlights how teachers in districts like Frisco ISD in Texas are completely priced out of the neighborhoods where they teach. I share how the exact same housing crisis is happening in Fairfax County, forcing teachers into grueling daily commutes just to afford rent. Even with the extreme financial strain on single-income families, I conclude that teaching remains the best job in the world.
